Who will lead the anarchists?!?
Harry wants to know who “we” are and what “they” have been up to….

Hi folks. Long time no see. Only 6 months of school left and xmas break just around the corner, so I may be back on a soccer field near you soon.

As I haven’t played in a while, I’m not sure who the “we” is that Tom refers to, but if there are concerns about the inclusiveness of this soccer email list being expressed offline, can these discussions also happen online too, so maybe we can learn more about each others needs and come up with solutions? If there are no major issues, then can we keep using this list and get 1-2 new moderators (Tony, this might fix that issue that happens with your email address).

In an ideal world, I’d like to see a stylish looking a-soccer website, integrating social media+soccer/social news+listserve(s), because we’ve been around 9 years and we deserve to celebrate that fact. Maybe we even have web designers on the email list who can put something new together? Here’s hoping.

Cheers, Harry

Tom is not done speaking to you.

The new list is a reflection of a need for the direct participation of the current group of a-soccer players. It will simplify the communication to the group of folks who are playing regularly and will create a more welcoming space for new folks who haven’t been around this scene for years,(like us old timers) to step in and shape the space the way they use it.

I am not interested in gate-keeping, and will solicit lots of folks to moderate. The old list is still a strong tool for organizing the larger community and connecting past and present.

The list of the current players shoud be managed by the current players.

Tom is back on top

The joy of lists.

We’ve had a regular game of a-soccer for about 9 years. Many different folks have come through the space and left their ideas and energies for us to build on. This a-soccer community went to Mexico to play with the Zapatistas, by invitation. This community has sent groups and individuals to the Anti-racist World Cup in Italy and organized it’s own tournaments here in town. It’s done amazing stuff.

The strength of the group has been its ability to change and adapt and move around while maintaining some strong core characteristics, like tolerance and respect. The first and most important principle of a-soccer has been the power of those participating to define the space as they use it, directly, by being there. And so it has changed as different people have used it.

Setting the stage pt. 2

Soon after, the fight for anarchy supremacy was joined:

“Hi, Harry here.

Before we switch to google and lose a bunch of folks in the shuffle (esp. since tom’s email was not clearly titled), I want to check in and see if there are any problems with the current listserve? I haven’t heard any chatter on this list, but would be interested to hear any concerns about functionality or message volume. I haven’t seen any requests for new members in months, but if there are any problems there, easily solved - anyone who is currently on the list can email a new member’s email / name to the list and I’ll add them. There are no back channels or secret handshakes. I can also add any of y’all as moderators to the list, with the ability to do the same. We used to have about 5 moderators, now its just me.

Take care,

Harry

Setting the stage pt. 1

I’m pretty sure I started it all with an innocent email asking the listserv what the winter schedule was these days.  Then came this response from a guy we’ll call Tom:

“Hey kids, we have a new list,  it’s a google group. If you want on it send me your email at ****@gmail.com.  The Winter soccer schedule is currently SUNDAYS at 2PM to meet and greet, trade recipes,2:30pm juego.”
